The V850 microcontrollers can be used in various applications from middle-range to high-end. The V850ES core products are affordable and can be easily incorporated In systems that use 16-bit controllers. The V850E1 core, was developed to provide high performance, and its successor, the V850E2M core, is the best choice for applications requiring top-level processing power.

High performance
- Ten times the MIPS performance of 8-bit or 16-bit MCUs operating on the same frequency, resulting in performance that is two to three times better at the actual application level.
- Can run on frequencies one-half to one-third lower than 8-bit or 16-bit MCUs, reducing system power consumption.

V850E2/Px
V850E2/Px are high-end microcontrollers for automotive applications with very high functional safety requirements up to ISO 26262 ASIL D. They are ideal for sophisticated motor control like for electric power steering systems (EPS) and HEV battery management. Communication with other ECUs is supported by integrated CAN and FlexRay interfaces.
V850E2/Sx
The evolution in car infotainment systems and networking within the car requires the introduction of protocols such as Ethernet and MOST (Media Oriented System Transport) to support high bandwidths and reliable data transfers. This is in addition to the well-established automotive networks such as CAN and IEBus (Inter Equipment Bus) also supported by Renesas' V850E2/Sx family of MCUs.

The V850ES/Fx has a V850ES low power CPU core and enhanced peripheral functions for automotive body control such as CAN and LIN interfaces.
